Am I Eligible for the Abortion Pill?

Are you thinking about abortion after finding out you are unexpectedly pregnant? You are not alone.

You may have many questions about pregnancy and your options. We are here to educate you about the abortion pill and the process so you can make an informed decision. In Virginia and in most states, women up to 70 days pregnant, with a viable and healthy pregnancy, are eligible for the abortion pill.

What is the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion, includes two different drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. These drugs work to terminate a pregnancy.

Mifepristone works to block the womb from absorbing the pregnancy hormone progesterone, ultimately ending a pregnancy. Next, misoprostol causes contractions and expels the pregnancy from the vagina through cramping and bleeding.

Am I Eligible for the Abortion Pill?

To determine if you’re eligible for the abortion pill, you will want to confirm your pregnancy with two steps. It’s vital to your health to not skip these steps.

1. Get lab-quality pregnancy testing

Though at-home pregnancy tests are 99% accurate, there is always a chance for inaccuracy if taken at the wrong time or incorrectly. To be sure, lab-quality pregnancy testing at a center like ours is recommended.

2. Receive an ultrasound

Once you receive a positive pregnancy test, the only way to confirm how far along you are is with an ultrasound! An ultrasound will reveal how far along you are and what type of abortion procedure you qualify for. If you are over 10 weeks along, a surgical abortion is needed.

Consider the Risks

There are many physical risks to the abortion pill to consider. According to the Mayo Clinic, these potential risks include:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion

  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding

  • Infection

  • Fever

  • Digestive system discomfort
